Fire Continue to Build Roster

ESTERO, FL  -  The Gulf Coast Fire of the A-League has signed defensive back Derrick Wells.

Wells attended Lehigh Senior High where his team finished 5-6 in 2010 and 7-6 in 2009 after starting the season 0-4. The team, coached by Pete Fominaya advanced to 2009 Class 3A Regional finals. Wells was a two-time second-team all-area selection by the News-Press and took part in the John Carrigan Rotary Classic all-star game. As a senior he had 80 tackles and had six interceptions as a junior. Wells was also a track and field standout, taking part in the 200 and 400-meter dashes.

Wells was a 4 year contributor at University of Minnesota where he appeared in 47 career games with 24 starts. His Freshman appeared in 11 games, and recorded eight tackles.  During his Sophomore season played in all 13 games despite battling a recurring injury during the season, started 11 at safety, tied for third on the team in tackles (74), second on the team in solo tackles (46), second on the team in pass breakups (10) and also made two interceptions, named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and Bronko Nagurski National Player of the Week after his performance at UNLV.  

In his Junior season wells played in 10 games and started five, he made 17 tackles, including one tackle-for-loss, broke up three passes, had one interception and recovered one fumble.  He started eight of 13 games his senior season, making 40 tackles and he broke up three passes, and recorded one interception. 

In 2015 Wells signed as an undrafted rookie with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
